That’s what Ray Bradbury says. It’s impossible to write 52 bad stories in a row.
I’m going to take him up on this.
Starting this Friday, the 6th, I’ll be writing one short story every week. Given that I’m an under-writer, they’ll probably be quite short indeed. But that’s good. I could use the practice.
I’ve written lots of short stories in the past, mainly as school assignments. While I’ve had a couple short stories published since college, the vast majority have been rejected by magazines and contests. Maybe they couldn’t handle my artistic vision. Maybe my stories just weren’t good enough.
In any case, I see this as an opportunity to write all sorts of stories. Stretching beyond fantasy and science fiction, I could write romances, historical fiction, maybe even some horror or slice of life vignettes. Magical realism? Are white, English-speaking, cishet Christian men allowed to write magical realism? Bah. I’ll write it anyway. I can write what I want.
Doesn’t mean anyone will read it.
I’m not being a downer. There’s just a good probability some of these stories won’t be publishable. At least at first.
Maybe I’ll share some of my past rejects here. Ooh! That’ll be fun. Starting next week, I’ll be posting some of my past rejected short stories, so you can tell me what’s wrong with them.
Come on, it’ll be fun!
